Art-based action research is a research strategy which guides the progress of research in the cycles of action research and uses art as a catalyst for development work — for example, empowerment or the better design of environments. Art-based action research is usually used in the development projects of art education, socially-engaged art, and contemporary art. Art serves many purposes in these development processes and projects. Art may be the intervention for problem solving or gaining new knowledge and understanding. Art can also be the subject of development or the tool for the research’s data collection and analysis.
