Annamari Manninen
Annamari Manninen (D.A.) works as a lecturer in art education (focus on media education) at the faculty of Art and Design, University of Lapland, Rovaniemi. She has a background as a teacher of visual art in upper secondary school and art school for children and youth. Her research has focused on teachers and pupils perspectives on identity, contemporary art and using online learning environments.
DissertationCreating Connections Contemporary art-based and concept-based learning about European citizenshipThe research was situated in the field of art education and examined the role of contemporary art in multidisciplinary teaching. The study was based on an action research project in which European identity was approached through contemporary art examples, by making artworks and sharing them in international quad blogs in elementary, secondary and upper secondary schools.
The context of the research was an international action research project, Creative Connections (2012–2014), that was a co-operation between six partner countries in the EU. The aim of the project was to develop and promote an active inter-country dialogue, specifcally between children, to enhance understanding of diferent perspectives on European citizenship using contemporary art. Te project involved pupils and teachers from 25 schools, from primary to upper secondary levels, with researchers and coordinators from six universities. Part of the project was the web-based quad blogs that ofered a space for pupils’ voices and dialogue and a gallery of contemporary European artworks that were selected and categorised to approach the theme and to introduce the diferent roles of art and contemporary approaches to making artworks. Within a theoretical framework, Manninen defined concept-based learning as an integrative and multidisciplinary teaching approach and social media as a learning environment; she also defined European citizenship education from social pedagogical and psychological perspectives and contemporary art in multidisciplinary learning.
